As a psychotherapist, I see clients from many
different backgrounds, professions and interests. What brings each of
them to my office is a desire for relief and a way to cope with life
issues that have become too great a concern.
Perhaps you don't quite know what is troubling you or
what to call it. That's okay, too. On some pages of this site, you'll
find overviews that may help you understand your concerns. Definitions
and labels are good for the written word, but what you probably want is
a way to resolve your problems and see positive options and
possibilities.
Through our therapy sessions, you will learn to view
problems in a new light and gain different perspectives that will help
you manage your concerns. You'll also learn ways to identify negative
thoughts that cause problems to recur. As a result, you'll understand
how to reframe destructive thoughts and make needed changes to achieve
your goals.
Grief Counseling
When
you think about it, every change brings the loss of one thing and the
gain of another. We each will experience difficult losses in our lives,
whether from the death of a loved one, the loss of a job, a divorce, a
lost friendship, an empty nest or a financial crisis.
As humans
we are uniquely wired to help one another during times of loss by
bearing witness to one another's struggles. However, loss and its
accompanying grief can be devastating to go through alone.
There
are many ways people experience, express and adapt to loss. Some people
grieve by expressing their feelings. Others grieve through problem
solving, planning and taking action. In most
cases, people in grief endure a period of deep sadness, feelings of
numbness, and even frustration, guilt
and anger.
During the grief process, your emotional reactions will run the gamut.
One day you'll be feeling "okay" and the next you'll be blindsided by
sadness. These feelings are natural, normal and to be expected.
No
matter the source of your loss, you will find me a heartfelt companion
who will listen in a supportive manner to your concerns. My role will
be to help you understand loss as a change that you can learn to manage
more effectively. Through our therapy sessions, I'll help you find ways
to:
Grieve in your own unique way
Reduce stress by organizing and prioritizing day-to-day and recovery-related tasks
Draw on your own strengths
Develop healthy coping mechanisms that permit you to gradually resume your own life
Know where to turn for recovery resources
Whether
your grief is recent or has been impacting your life for some time,
therapy can help you explore the emotions surrounding your loss, enable
you to learn healthy coping skills and improve your resilience. Finding
support from family, friends, group therapy or social support groups
after a loss also can help. In Austin, Hospice Austin provides a number of resources for those seeking grief support groups.
